About the Emergency Department (ED) Performance vs Pre-Pandemic Projection Dashboard

Report Description

The ED Performance vs Pre-Pandemic Projection Dashboard displays multiple data values from calendar year 2018 forward that reference both ED Length of Stay (ED LOS) and Time to Physician Initial Assessment (PIA). This four-graph dashboard provides monthly actual verses projected length of stay values for all admitted patients and high and low acuity non-admitted patients compared against the ED provincial wait time targets for each group. The time to physician initial assessment is also included in this dashboard. The forecasted value for each measure is presented with a 95% confidence interval identified.

Report Methodology

The data in this report is used to visualise the predicted verses actual values using a triple exponential smoothing method. All data points included in each graph are reported at the 90th percentile.

90th Percentile (Hours):  The 90th percentile represents the longest time (in hours) spent among 90% of patients. The 90th percentile is used as a system performance measure because it encompasses the longer stays in the emergency department experienced by some patients.

Key data groups are defined as follows:

ED LOS-Admitted Patients: Total time elapsed from triage or registration (whichever is earlier) to patient left ED for admitted patients

ED LOS-Time to PIA: Total time elapsed from triage or registration (whichever is earlier) to physician initial assessment for all patients

ED LOS-Non-admitted High Acuity Patients: Total time elapsed from triage or registration (whichever is earlier) to patient left ED for non-admitted high acuity (CTAS I-III) patients

ED LOS-Non-admitted Low Acuity Patients: Total time elapsed from triage or registration (whichever is earlier) to patient left ED for non-admitted low acuity (CTAS IV-V) patients
